The semiconductor sector took center stage at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, showcasing a wave of investment commitments from industry leaders. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, in a significant move, announced the establishment of a “huge” semiconductor fabrication plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region, expanding Tata’s presence in Gujarat.
Chandrasekaran highlighted the imminent conclusion of negotiations and outlined plans to commence operations in 2024. Emphasizing the growth trajectory, he mentioned the extension of C295 aircraft manufacturing from Vadodara to Dholera, with work progressing at full speed. The C295 aircraft manufacturing plant in Vadodara, initiated by Prime Minister Modi on October 30, 2022, is a collaboration between Tata and Airbus, dedicated to producing transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
In addition to these developments, Chandrasekaran revealed plans for India’s inaugural giga factory dedicated to manufacturing 20 gigawatt Lithium-ion batteries. The construction is scheduled to commence in Sanand within the next few months, following the signing of an agreement in June 2023.
Micron Technology’s CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, announced the status of their semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand. Despite a slight delay, the first phase, encompassing 500,000 square feet of clean room space, is expected to be operational by early 2025. Mehrotra underlined the commencement of the hiring process, with the project anticipated to generate 5,000 direct jobs in Sanand and an additional 15,000 community jobs in the coming years.
Mehrotra expressed optimism about Micron Technology’s investment catalyzing a semiconductor cluster, fostering momentum that would benefit India. He shared insights into Simmtech, a key supplier to Micron, planning to establish a unit in Sanand to support Micron’s operations, further enhancing the overall ecosystem.
The announcements at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 underscore the growing significance of Gujarat in the semiconductor and manufacturing landscape, reflecting a positive outlook for India’s technological and economic advancement in the coming years.
