After the match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2023, the talk shifted from the game to the fight between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli. However, the altercation was just a continuation of an earlier incident between Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq. During the match, there was a heated exchange between the two players, leaving Naveen-ul-Haq feeling furious. He later shared his thoughts on the incident and on Kohli with one of his teammates in the dressing room.
The altercation between Naveen and Kohli began with the latter making some comments and showing his shoe at the former, which infuriated the Afghanistan player. Naveen charged towards Kohli, but the umpire and Amit Mishra, the other LSG batter, intervened immediately. Kohli continued the intense exchange with Mishra, signalling to keep Naveen calm. After the match, the two shared an aggressive handshake, but Naveen continued to utter a few words, which led to a verbal retaliation from Kohli
However, Glenn Maxwell intervened and separated the two before things got out of hand. According to the Indian Express, Naveen later told one of his LSG teammates that he came to play in the IPL, not to take abuse from anyone. He also extended the battle to social media by writing on his Instagram story, “You get what you deserved that’s how it should be and that’s how it goes.”
The BCCI took strict action against both Naveen and Kohli. Naveen was fined 50% of his match fees, while Kohli had to hand over his entire match fees. Gambhir, who had an ugly spat with Kohli moments after the Naveen incident during handshakes, was also fined 100% of his match fees. The incident overshadowed the crucial match and win for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2023 season.
