The alleged plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a United States citizen, on American soil has brought to light a deeply concerning incident with potential international repercussions. A careful examination of the criminal indictment filed by the US Justice Department reveals a narrative that intersects with the highest echelons of diplomatic engagement.

The crux of the matter lies in the dates outlined in the indictment, particularly during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States between June 21 and 23, 2023. The pivotal day was June 22nd, a day filled with significant events, including Modi’s meeting with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office, an address to the joint session of the United States Congress, and a grand state dinner hosted at the White House in his honor.

The indictment points to “engagements” between “high-level US and Indian government officials,” unmistakably referring to Modi’s state visit. Intriguingly, the officials in India, allegedly orchestrating the plot through a conduit known as ‘Nick,’ initially advocated for a delay in any action during these diplomatic interactions. However, a sudden change in instruction emerged, leading to a disturbing revelation that the plotters were prepared to execute the assassination during Modi’s visit.

Nikhil Gupta, the purported organizer of the murder, communicated a shift in urgency on June 19, citing the killing of a Sikh secessionist in Canada as a reason to expedite the plan. On June 20th, Gupta’s handlers in India deemed Pannun’s murder a “priority,” and the message was relayed that they had the green light to proceed at the earliest convenience.

Remarkably, on June 22, the day of Modi’s high-profile events, Gupta’s contact in New Delhi conveyed that a message from the “boss” had been received. If the hitman could confirm Pannun’s presence at home, it would be a signal to proceed. The brazenness of contemplating an assassination on the day Modi addressed the US Congress and enjoyed a state dinner is deeply unsettling. The indictment implies that the directive came from Gupta’s superiors in India, dispelling the notion of a lone, rogue actor.

The document further reveals a video meeting in New Delhi linked to the plot, attended by individuals in business attire, hinting at possible government officials or operatives. Messages to Gupta underscore the presence of informants providing additional information on the intended victim.

The term “boss” is recurrent in the indictment, with the identity undisclosed. Speculation arises that this figure is likely a senior official within India’s security establishment. The highly centralized nature of the Modi government suggests that planning such a murder plot without the knowledge of individuals close to the prime minister is improbable.

This alleged plot raises serious questions about the depths of involvement and knowledge within India’s corridors of power, potentially influencing diplomatic relations between the US and India. The international community will undoubtedly be closely monitoring the developments surrounding this shocking revelation.
