The Assam government has declared January 22 as a “dry day” in light of the upcoming consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced this decision after a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati. The move is aimed at commemorating the inauguration of the Ram temple, with various leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, and over 6,000 attendees scheduled to participate in the ceremony in Ayodhya.

The cabinet meeting addressed several other significant decisions, showcasing the government’s commitment to the welfare of diverse communities and promoting entrepreneurship among women. Financial and administrative powers for the development councils of the Mising, Rabha Hasong, and Tiwa communities were increased, with plans to seek additional funds from the Centre. This strategic move aims to empower these communities and support their developmental initiatives.

Furthermore, the government approved a financial package for women registered under self-help groups (SHGs), providing crucial support for their entrepreneurial ventures. Nearly 49 lakh women stand to benefit from this scheme, highlighting the government’s focus on fostering women-led economic initiatives.

In another key development, the cabinet decided to extend the coverage of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) to include government employees and pensioners with an annual income of less than ₹4 lakh. This expansion ensures that a broader segment of the population, including government employees and pensioners, can avail the benefits of the NFSA. Additionally, these individuals will be entitled to health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, a move aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility.

The comprehensive decisions taken by the Assam government underscore its commitment to inclusive development, community empowerment, and the well-being of its citizens. The declaration of January 22 as a “dry day” not only aligns with religious sentiments but also reflects the state’s cultural ethos and its acknowledgment of significant national events.
