In a recent turn of events, the Maldives Envoy to India, Ibrahim Shaheeb, was spotted leaving the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi’s South Block on Monday morning. This development unfolds against the backdrop of a heated controversy surrounding derogatory social media comments made by some Maldivian ministers regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep.

High Commissioner Ibrahim Shaheeb was observed entering and leaving the MEA office building within a short span, indicating diplomatic engagements amid the escalating tensions.

The controversy erupted last week when the Maldives deputy minister, along with several cabinet members and government officials, made disparaging remarks on social media about PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep on January 2. PM Modi had shared multiple pictures of his visit, including snapshots of him attempting snorkeling, and expressed the “exhilarating experience” of exploring the Union Territory.

However, a now-deleted post by Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Shiuna, included mocking and disrespectful references to PM Modi, sparking outrage and diplomatic strains.

The Maldivian government swiftly distanced itself from the remarks, with Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer denouncing the comments as “unacceptable.” Zameer emphasized that such derogatory comments did not reflect the official position of the Maldives government, reaffirming their commitment to positive and constructive dialogues with all partners, especially neighboring countries.

Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, acknowledging India as a good friend, condemned the use of hateful language against India by Maldivian government officials. He urged against letting such remarks negatively impact the long-standing friendship between the two nations.

Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid deemed the derogatory remarks on social media as “reprehensible” and “odious.” He called on the Maldivian government to identify the responsible officials and take appropriate action.

In response, a section of India’s film fraternity expressed solidarity with PM Modi and criticized the offensive comments made by Maldivian leaders. They also lent support to PM Modi’s promotion of beach tourism in Lakshadweep.

The situation underscores the delicate nature of diplomatic relations and the potential impact of social media interactions on international affairs. As the diplomatic community closely monitors the unfolding events, the need for responsible and respectful discourse remains paramount to maintain the historical ties between India and the Maldives.
